Together, Casas Baixas and Alcarias de Baixo hills located 5 km from Cachopo, have around 20 residents, all aged above 50 years old.
They are excellent places to appreciate the highland rural architecture with their schist streets, their ground floor houses with bare stones on sight or whitewashed walls, stone furnaces used by the community and enclosures for cattle.
This location makes it possible to contemplate the north-eastern configuration of the mountain range of Caldeirão, the local flora is made of rockrose, sets of Holm oaks and the most recent spots of pines and cork oaks.
The everyday life in the highland is ruled by the agricultural activities such as harvests and cattle breeding. One can still observe old craft like shoemakers, weaving wool, lace trimmed and regional traditional sweets.
